MYSTERY & MAGIC, WORTHY ADDITIONS TO THE SOUTH'S LITERARY TRADITION

What Blooms From Dust

FROM THE AUTHOR: JAMES MARKERT

Historical Fiction with a mix of the magical, supernatural, suspense, humor, and southern gothic

I’ve never been one to only read one genre—as so many types of novels, depending on my mood, interest me—so it makes sense, to me at least, that my own interests in writing aren’t necessarily pigeonholed into one exact genre. I like reading everything from historical to suspense to literary to humor and beyond, but to me it’s all about the story and characters. Regardless of the genre, tell me a compelling story, and that’s exactly what I try to do. My first novel, A White Wind Blew, was Historical Fiction. My next 4 novels—the 4th of which comes out next April—are all historical fiction as well, but with a mixture of supernatural and/or magical realism, mystery and suspense. For some reason these stories, as I wrote them, just migrated that way, so I let them, and my most recent release, What Blooms from Dust, is no different. A story of the 1930s Dust Bowl with a dusting of Stephen King. To me it seemed like the perfect combo, and so far readers are in agreement. Some may think this makes it difficult to categorize, but I think that’s what makes my books unique. There’s a little something in there for everyone! History, check! Magic, check! Supernatural, check! Suspense, I got that too! The difficult balance in doing this with Historical Fiction is taking the reader out of that historical world, but I take great care to make it authentic. So one might say that such and such plot point couldn’t happen in the “real world”, which is fine, but I make it my goal to make that plot point realistic in the world of that particular book, and I won’t turn a book in until I think I’ve succeeded. With this being said, if I had to pick a genre for my novels it would be this: Historical Fiction with a mix of the magical, supernatural, suspense, humor, and southern gothic! - - James Markert

Steal Away Home

FROM THE AUTHOR: BILLY COFFEY

Stories that help me better understand this life than stories that help me escape it

"Perhaps it is owed to a fundamental flaw in my character or that behind me stretches a long line of desperate and damaged kin, but those are the people to whom I’ve always been drawn. In life, but upon the page especially. Many of my novels are populated by characters who mired in a precarious dance upon the thin line of good and evil, right and wrong. They wobble and skirt and fall forward and back. Just like most. Like me, if I’m honest. So give me the shattered character, the lost. Give me the spirit cast low and the muddied heart and the soiled conscience, because I would rather write stories that help me better understand this life than stories that help me escape it, just as I would rather tell the truth of how we are all the same rather than lie about how we are all different." - - Billy Coffey

The Man He Never Was

FROM THE AUTHOR: JAMES RUBART

Finish reading and have more LIFE than when you started

I write stories for people who want more joy, more freedom, more hope. Do I want to wildly entertain you? Yes! Do I hope you can’t put them down? Of course. But even more, I want you to finish and have more LIFE than when you started. That’s the theme at the heart of all my novels.
